After the turnaround expert Robert Steve Miller joined as Delphi’s CEO in July 2005, it looked like he would convince GM and the United Auto Workers (UAW) Union for restructuring. However, after talks failed, bankruptcy was the only option. In March 2006, UAW members of Delphi have authorised a strike against Delphi, since it asked for a legal injunction to enable it to cut wages. Though bankruptcy will give it temporary respite, Delphi’s future depends on the efficacy of restructuring plans. Its decision to ask GM for a guaranteed business of $1 billion every month might support it in the short term. However, Delphi will have to engage in more tie ups in Asia to reduce its high dependence on Detroit, if it hopes for a turnaround.

Time Warnerexpands its media

Time Warner Inc. has bought a 50% stake in Court TV for $735 million. The company plans to develop the Court TV brand because this is for the first time that the cable brand has come under single ownership. Court TV, which is a very popular cable company, is watched by 86 million households offering programs on the US legal system with live trial coverage and investigative drama. It is also operating three websites including TheSmokingGun.com, a very popular website that focuses on celebrity cases. It is speculated that this acquisition will trigger more cable network acquisitions in the future.

IIPM-Business and Economy (Health Insurance)

Mohapatra was offered health insurance by Royal Sundaram along with his SBI credit card, but on placing a request for the insurance cover to Royal Sundaram at a time when he needed it most—to pay for a cervical spine injury— the insurance company outrightly rejected his claim for Rs1.5 lakhs, attributing his surgery to a previous claim.

Incorrect Polling Results

Perhaps the memories of the incredibly incorrect polling results during the last round of General Elections have killed their hunger. While TV anchors were confidently citing figures about the success of BJP’s ‘India Shining’ campaign and their inevitable win, the Congress and its allies were quietly finishing them off in critical states. Most of the media was unanimous in its findings and didn’t see the woods from the trees until it was too late.
