Globalisation, an inescapable process emanating from the interaction of myriad technologies and market forces, is proving to be a bitter pill for Cameroon. After 17 years of global integration, it has failed to accelerate growth rate. More than 50% live in abject poverty and about 65% live in rural areas, dependent on agriculture.

Hutchison follows the BPL network

Hutchison Essar, the Indian unit of Hong Kong based Hutchison Telecommunications International Limited (HTX), has taken over BPL Mobile Communications Limited and BPL Mobile Cellular Limited. The deal, which is being valued at $1.15 billion, also includes a conditional agreement to acquire Essar Spacetel Limited. Hutchison Essar is a joint venture between Hutchison Telecommunications and Essar, an Indian conglomerate. The BPL acquisition is expected to increase Hutchison Essar’s subscriber base to more than 12 million, making it the third-largest cell phone company in India. Earlier this year, the Essar Group had acquired a controlling stake in BPL Communications Limited.

MasterCard is going public, more to save itself from future legal costs


True to its name, MasterCard, the world’s number two credit card company, has delivered a masterstroke in August 2005 by announcing its intention to go public. The company has stated in its filing to Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), “Transitioning to a different ownership and governance structure will lead us... to a more stable base from which to execute our strategy.”
