Scaling new heights

Around the time newly crowned 2011 Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel was establishing his own world record at Suzuka, Japan, the Red Bull Racing team was scaling new heights in India too. The reigning World Champions defied odds of every kind by ‘taking the high road’, literally. Red Bull Racing driver Neel Jani, a Swiss driver of Indian origin, drove the Red Bull Racing Formula One Show car on the world’s highest motorable road at the Khardung-La pass in the Leh region of India at a dizzying height of 18,380 feet. This makes Red Bull Racing the first Formula One team to have ever managed to transport, fire-up and drive an F1 car on what is arguably the most challenging driving terrain in the world. In fact, the Red Bull Speed Street Leh project marks another milestone for Red Bull Racing; it joins the team’s other impressive runs, including the Formula Santo Domingo Beach Run and the Canadian Red Bull Frozen One on ice. Seems like Red Bull is climbing up the ladder fast.

Facebook & Stories!

FacebookEver since Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg extended the social networking portal beyond Harvard in 2004, it has been one of the largest revolutions in the global social networking industry globally. With the website reaching a record 500 million users recently, it seemingly has close to 8% of the total population on the planet registered on the portal. The latest feature being added to Facebook is the Facebook Stories link, that is basically an application that allows users to pen down the legacy of how Facebook became an integral part of their lives. While critics label the new feature immodestly boastful, the fact is that this is an extremely clever move, with the feature aimed to showcase to the world brilliant case studies of satisfied consumers straight from the horse’s mouth. Stories of over the top happy users have already started to do the rounds, evidently with much help from the PR machinery of Facebook. Still, as per one recent National Geographic survey, Facebook, despite being the leading social networking site in the world, finds few takers in countries like China, Russia, Brazil, Japan and the sorts. Even countries like India have legacy social networking sites like Orkut still garnering more usage than Facebook. Reports estimated Facebook’s 2009 revenues to be close to $1 billion. For Facebook to have an objective of becoming larger than that, the next big step has to be streamlining its advertising offers to clients.

“We’ll never sell through retail!”

Tupperware started in India in 1955 and since then has achieved near dominance. Asha Gupta, MD, Tupperware, tells us why continuous focus on word of mouth publicity and a home sales networks run by housewives is more important than selling through retail

Can you tell us about the journey of Tupperware in India?
The brand itself is a 55 years old. India is a very exciting channel. Globally, India is a very big market for us. When we started off, middle level families started to buy Tupperware. We have achieved a nice position. We are not a company which advertises too much. We use word of mouth, traditional social marketing and women selling to women technique. We want Tupperware to enter every home in India.

Can you explain your product selling technique? What exactly is the ‘Party Plan’?
We sell through our own network of demonstrators. It starts with a lady hosting a Tupperware party at her home and inviting her friends; and a Tupperware demonstrator demonstrates the product among the group of people. We call it the Tupperware Party where they get together and have fun, discuss recipes too – which adds value to people for spending time out together. The lady gives a date afterwards where she tells about the future Tupperware Party. She will actually endorse such parties with a network of few people where she gets to know more friends.

Who’s your target group (Are they just housewives?) and how do you reach them?
The decision maker in our product category are women. On one hand, we have a network of people who keep on moving along and penetrating home to network. Conventionally, we sell through a direct selling network. We have a tie-up with Big Bazaar, where we put up a show kiosk and provide people the opportunity to see, to touch and feel Tupperware products because everybody wants to buy Tupperware products but don’t know where to get them. So over there (at the kiosks), Tupperware people guide you.

Can we expect to see retail outlets of Tupperware?
We don’t plan to sell in any retail outlets as we are giving women the opportunity to run a business directly from their homes. There is fun in selling our products because they are sold from homes; if that product is available everywhere, then what’s the fun of selling it.

Salesforce.com is making a killing with its cloud-based CRM solutions,

The company’s applications in the CRM arena consist of two main products – Sales Cloud 2 and Service Cloud 2. It has gained some 72500 customers globally since Salesforce was set up in 1999. Sales Cloud 2 enable sales departments to take initiatives like building rich customer databases, managing and analysing outcomes of marketing campaigns, updating contact information and bringing attention to poor quality records, dashboards that keep a tab on performance indicators and provide actionable intelligence, access to all presentations and data sheets and automating sales processes. Service Cloud offers utilities like having all possible customer information and past records at the agent’s disposal, enabling self service, faster & customizable searches for the right solution, dashboards on customer performance, et al. Another very exciting application (in the beta stage) is the Salesforce Chatter, akin to being a company’s private Facebook, through which salespeople can stay in constant touch and exchange information in real time.

Salesforce.com has been seeing impressive growth globally, and was made a part of S&P 500 in 2008 when Freddie Mac and Fanny Mae dropped out. It posted revenues of $1.3 billion for FY 2009-10 (growth of 21% yoy). Revenues from Asia Pacific grew the fastest by 36.32% yoy to reach $149.39 million. The response has been phenomenal in India, where the company grew its customer base by 42% in FY 2010. They have targeted a lot of small small businesses looking for low cost and easily deployable CRM systems. The expected boom in 3G and broadband makes India even more potentially lucrative.

Then again, there is that adage of having too much of a good thing. Salesforce could face what could be a protracted litigation against software giant Microsoft, which has also launched its own Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online software. The latter complains that Salesforce.com infringes 9 of Microsoft’s patents in software menus, GUIs, toolbars and also how the company takes data from remote computers. Actually, competition between the two has been intensifying. The not-so-politically-correct Steve Ballmer even promised to give Salesforce.com “a very effective run for is money”. Having a competitor like Microsoft means you are in the big league. But Microsoft’s past record on how it treats competitors is legendary; something that Salesforce.com would do well to stay warned about!
